Victory Day, May 9th - Paying respect to the innocent victims of the Second World War

On the occasion of May 9th, the Victory Day in Europe, Consul General of the Reupublic of Serbia in Toronto, Vasilije Petkovic, laid a wreath at the Holocaust Memorial center in Toronto, which, was dedicated to all innocent victims, including those who had been exterminated in the concetration camp of Jasenovac in the Natzi papet state of ``Independent State of Croatia``, run by the Ustasha government, during the Second World War.

The Memorial Center was built by the ``Canadian Society for Yad Vashem``, who had been established in 1986 in order to preserve the memory of crimes committed against Jews in concentration camps during the Second World War. The aim of this memorial complex is to teach younger generations about the terrible period of history, as well as to remind the publicity that something like this shoudl never happen again.

The Memorial Center was designed by the founders of the "Canadian Association Yad Vashem", who survived the Holocaust, David Smuskovic and Peter Silverman. Part of the Serbian community in Toronto also contributated to the construction of the Center.

The names of all concentration camps from the Second World War, including Jasenovac, are written at the foot of the obelisk. The name of this camp is also engraved in capital letters on on of the paths leading to the Obelisk on whose top is the eternal fire.

The eternal memorial flame was lit in 1991, and the memorial walls were set up in 2001. The historical story of the Canadian victims of the Holocaust is engraved in eight memorial walls. On one of them are written the names of the non-Jews who saved the lives of the Jews and besides their names, there are flags of their states or nationality. Among the other flags there is also Serbian, beside the name of the Jovanovic family.

Consul General Vasilije Petkovic laid wreath with a message: "Honoring the Innocent Victims, May 9th, 2019,  Consulate Genral of the Republic of Serbia, Toronto", under the inscription of the Jasenovac concentration camp.
