Remembrance Day Marked in Toronto
The Consul General of the Republic of Serbia in Toronto, Dejan Eraković, laid a wreath today, on the anniversary of the end of the First World War, at Ontario Veterans’ Memorial.
The anniversary of the signing of the Armistice in Compiègne between the Allies and Germany, which ended the First World War, is commemorated as Armistice Day in Serbia and as Remembrance Day in Canada.
Serbia and Canada were allies during the First World War, and Canadians of Serbian origin fought within the Canadian Expeditionary Forces.
During the offensive operations in Serbia in 1914 and 1915, many doctors from Canada voluntarily joined to treat the wounded and those suffering from typhus.
In remembrance of their humanity and dedication, Consul General Eraković visited today the memorial plaque dedicated to Canadian doctors who helped the Serbian people, located in the atrium of the Medical Sciences Building at the University of Toronto.
Among the physicians who served in war-torn Serbia were individuals who left a lasting legacy in Canada, including, among others, Quebec’s first Minister of Health Albiny Paquette and one of Canada’s first female physicians and founder of several hospitals, Irma LeVasseur.
