ADMISSION TO THE CITIZENSHIP OF SERBIAN NATIONALS

A Serbian national, who does not reside on the territory of the Republic of Serbia, may be admitted to the citizenship of the Republic of Serbia provided that he has reached 18 years of age, has not been deprived of legal capacity and submits a written statement that he considers the Republic of Serbia his state. (Article 23 of the Law on Citizenship). Requests are submitted by mail to the Consulate General of the Republic of Serbia in Toronto.

Required documents:
1. Completed application for citizenship (form). The applicant's signature must be notarized by a notary public.
2. Statement that the Republic of Serbia is considered its state (form).
3. For persons born in the former republic of SFRY - Birth certificate (Birth certificate) and Certificate of citizenship (Domovnica, Certificate of citizenship), not older than one year. If you also have Canadian citizenship, enclose proof of Canadian citizenship (photocopy of naturalization card), translated into Serbian
4. For persons born in Canada:
• In Ontario - Certified Copy of Birth Registration (Statement of Live Birth) certified in Official  Documents Services (222 Jarvis Street, Toronto), translated by a certified translator into Serbian in  Cyrillic.
• In other provinces / territories - original Birth Certificate certified by Global Affairs Canada and  the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in Ottawa, translated by a certified translator into Serbian  from Cyrillic.
5. If you are married: the original of the marriage certificate (for a marriage concluded in the Republic of Serbia or other republics of the former SFRY).

For a marriage in Canada:
• In Ontario - Certified Copy of Marriage Registration (Marriage License) certified by Official  Documents Services (222 Jarvis Street, Toronto), translated by a certified translator into Serbian  in Cyrillic.
• In other provinces / territories - original Marriage Certificate certified by Global Affairs Canada  and the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in Ottawa, translated by a certified translator into  Serbian from Cyrillic.
6. Proof of residence in Canada (Permanent Residence Card or Work Permit) if the applicant is not a Canadian citizen.
7. Photocopy of passport.

If a minor is included in the Application for citizenship of the Republic of Serbia:
1. The request for admission of the child and the Statement that he / she considers the Republic of Serbia as his / her country shall be signed by the parent.
2. Consent of the other parent for the admission of the child to the citizenship of the Republic of Serbia (form).
3. If the minor child is older than 14 years, it is necessary to sign a Statement that he / she agrees with the submission of the request (form)
4. The consular fee is 317 CAD and is paid through the Money Order which reads to the Consulate General of Serbia of Serbia. The fee is non-refundable.
Notes:
• If the request is submitted by the family (spouses and their minor children) the total fee for the whole family is paid in the amount of 317 CAD.
• Every document in English must have a translation into Serbian.
• The time required to resolve the request by the Ministry of Interior is about one year
 

DETERMINATION OF CITIZENSHIP

A person who has reached the age of 23, born abroad, whose both parents were citizens of the Republic of Serbia at the time of birth, or a person born in Serbia whose one parent was a citizen of Serbia at the time of his birth and the other a foreign citizen, may apply for citizenship of the Republic of Serbia (Article 44 of the Law on Citizenship)

Required documents:
1. Completed application for citizenship (form). The applicant's signature must be notarized by a notary public.
2. Completed form which is a statement that the competent authority in the Republic of Serbia officially obtains the data necessary for the decision-making process. If a given statement is submitted with the request, in that case it is not necessary to submit the documents under items 3, 5, 6 and 7.
3. Proof that the person is not registered in the records of citizens of the Republic of Serbia on the territory of the Republic of Serbia, according to the place of birth of the applicant and the place of birth or residence of his parents at the time of birth of the applicant. This evidence does not need to be submitted if a statement is signed that the said evidence is obtained officially (item 2).
4. For persons born in Canada:
- In Ontario - Certified Copy of Birth Registration (Statement of Live Birth) certified in Official  Documents Services (222 Jarvis Street, Toronto), translated by a certified translator into Serbian  in Cyrillic.
- In other provinces / territories - original Birth Certificate certified by Global Affairs Canada and  the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in Ottawa, translated by a certified translator into Serbian  from Cyrillic.
5. If you are married, the original of the marriage certificate (for a marriage concluded in the Republic of Serbia or other republics of the former SFRY). For a marriage in Canada:
- In Ontario - Certified Copy of Marriage Registration (Marriage License) certified in Official  Documents Services (222 Jarvis Street, Toronto), translated by a certified translator into Serbian  in Cyrillic.
- In other provinces / territories - original Marriage Certificate certified by Global Affairs Canada  and the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in Ottawa, translated by a certified translator into  Serbian from Cyrillic.
6. For births in the Republic of Serbia - Birth certificate issued by the competent authority of the Republic of Serbia. This document does not need to be submitted if a statement is signed that the said document is obtained officially (form).
7. Original certificate of citizenship of the Republic of Serbia for parents, not older than one year. These documents do not need to be submitted if a statement is signed that the data on Serbian citizenship for parents are obtained officially (form).
8. Marriage certificate for parents issued by the competent authority of the Republic of Serbia, if the marriage was concluded in the Republic of Serbia. This document does not need to be submitted if a statement is signed to obtain the said information officially (form). If the marriage took place in Canada -
In Ontario - Certified Copy of Marriage Registration (Marriage License) certified in Official  Documents Services (222 Jarvis Street, Toronto), translated by a certified translator into Serbian  in Cyrillic.
In other provinces / territories - original Marriage Certificate certified by Global Affairs Canada  and the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in Ottawa, translated by a certified translator into  Serbian from Cyrillic
9. Photocopy of Canadian passport.
10. The consular fee is 101 CAD and is payable by the Money Order to the Consulate General of Serbia of Serbia. The fee is non-refundable.
Note:
• Each document in English must have a translation into Serbian in Cyrillic.
 

ADMISSION OF EMIGRANTS TO CITIZENSHIP

An emigrant (a person who emigrated from the Republic of Serbia with the intention of permanently living abroad) and his descendant may be admitted to the citizenship of the Republic of Serbia provided that the applicant has reached 18 years of age, has not been deprived of legal capacity and submits a written statement He considers the Republic of Serbia as his state. (Article 18 of the Law on Citizenship)

Required documents:
1. Completed application for citizenship (form). The signature of the applicant must be certified by a notary public. Statement that the Republic of Serbia is considered its state (form).
2. For persons born in the former republic of SFRY - Birth certificate (Birth certificate) and Certificate of citizenship (Domovnica, Certificate of citizenship), not older than one year. If you also have Canadian citizenship, enclose proof of Canadian citizenship (photocopy of naturalization card), translated into Serbian
3. For persons born in Canada:
1. In Ontario - Certified Copy of Birth Registration (Statement of Live Birth) certified in Official  Documents Services (222 Jarvis Street, Toronto), translated by a certified translator into Serbian  in Cyrillic.

5. Birth certificate for ancestors who were born in the Republic of Serbia and had the citizenship of the Republic of Serbia. These documents are not submitted if the applicant signs a statement that the competent authority in the Republic of Serbia officially obtains the necessary information for the decision-making process and fills in the form under item 3.
6. Photocopies of old passports and other documents available to the applicant.
7. Photocopies of documents that can be proof of Serbian origin for ancestors
8. Proof of residence in Canada (copy of Permanent Residence Card) if the applicant is not a Canadian citizen.
9. Certificate of Canadian Citizenship if the applicant is a Canadian citizen.
10. Photocopy of passport.

If a minor is covered by a parent's request:
• The request and statement are signed by the parent.
• Statement of consent of the other parent (form).
• A child aged 14 to 18 signs a statement (form) that he / she agrees with the submitted request of the parents for acquiring citizenship.
The consular fee is 317 CAD and is paid in cash or Money Order which reads at the Embassy of Serbia. The fee is non-refundable.

Notes:
• If the request is submitted by the family (spouses and their minor children) the total fee for the whole family is paid in the amount of 338 CAD.
• Every document in English must have a translation into Serbian.
• The time required to resolve the request by the Ministry of Interior is about a year and a half.

ADMISSION TO THE CITIZENSHIP OF THE REPUBLIC OF SERBIA - REFUGEES, EXILED OR DISPLACED PERSONS

A person born in another republic of the former SFRY, who had the citizenship of that republic or is a citizen of another state originating in the territory of the former SFRY, who resides in Canada as a refugee, exiled or displaced person, may be admitted to the citizenship of the Republic of Serbia if he/she is at least 18 years old, he/she has not been deprived of legal capacity and if he/she submits a written statement that he considers the Republic of Serbia as his state. (Article 23 of the Law on Citizenship).

Required documents:
1. Completed application for citizenship (form). The applicant's signature must be notarized by a notary public.
2. Statement that the Republic of Serbia is considered its state (form). The signature of the applicant must be notarized.
3. For persons born in the former republic of SFRY - Birth certificate (Birth certificate) and Certificate of citizenship (Domovnica, Certificate of citizenship), not older than one year. If you also have Canadian citizenship, enclose proof of Canadian citizenship (photocopy of naturalization card), translated into Serbian
4. For persons born in Canada:
In Ontario - Certified Copy of Birth Registration (Statement of Live Birth) certified in Official  Documents Services (222 Jarvis Street, Toronto), translated by a certified translator into Serbian  in Cyrillic.

6. For persons born in the Republic of Serbia - a signed statement that the competent authority in the Republic of Serbia officially obtains the data necessary for the decision-making procedure (form).
7. Copy of refugee ID
8. Proof of residence in Canada (Permanent Residence card or work permit) if the applicant is not a Canadian citizen
9. Photocopy of passport

If a minor is included in the Application for citizenship of the Republic of Serbia:
1. The request for the admission of the child and the Statement that he considers the Republic of Serbia as his state shall be signed by the parent.
2. Consent of the other parent for the admission of the child to the citizenship of the Republic of Serbia (form)
3. If the minor child is older than 14 years, it is necessary to sign a Statement that he / she agrees with the submission of the request (form)
The consular fee is 104 CAD and is payable by the Money Order which to the Consulate General of Serbia. The fee is non-refundable.

Note:
• If the request is submitted by the family (spouses and their minor children) the total fee for the whole family is paid in the amount of 103 CAD.
• Each document in English must have a translation into Serbian in Cyrillic.
• The time required to resolve the request by the Ministry of Interior is about a year and a half.
